How did Alabama beat Queens?
Queens jumped out 5-1. Alabama took a 9-8 lead with 4:20 left in the first quarter, then went on a 31-6 run that decided the game. Queens shot 3-of-15 in the first quarter, and Alabama led 47-20 at halftime.
The Tide cooled off in the third quarter, shooting 5-of-15, and Queens won the period 16-13. Alabama answered with 32 points in the fourth.
Rebounding did the most damage. Alabama won the boards 54-37, and 15 offensive rebounds turned into 21 second-chance points. Love said after the game that she expects this to be the smallest team in the SEC, so those extra chances will matter. Alabama also forced 19 turnovers and scored 19 points off them.
Ace Austin, a sophomore guard making her first career start, had 15 points, 7 rebounds, 4 assists and 2 steals. Boston College transfer Amirah Anderson added 14 points, 5 rebounds and a team-high 5 assists. Torrence, a transfer from Cincinnati, was playing her first game for Alabama. Tianna Chambers also made her first career start. Makayla Minshall led Queens with 18 points, and Brenae Jones-Grant had 7 rebounds.
The one soft spot was the free-throw line, where Alabama went 17-of-29. Athletic director Greg Byrne gave Love a commemorative basketball after the win.
