How did Alabama beat Arkansas State?
Alabama started slow. Arkansas State’s Layne Taylor made his first three 3-pointers, and the Red Wolves led 19-11 with 11:28 left in the first half. Alabama answered with an 8-0 run in just over a minute to tie it 19-19.
A Drew Fielder 3-pointer gave Alabama a 33-32 lead with 4:13 left in the half. Then the Tide closed the half on a 26-4 run over the final 7:12 and led 51-34 at the break.
Arkansas State did not go away. After Alabama pushed the lead to 67-44, the Red Wolves ran off 11 straight points to cut it to 67-55 with 14:42 left. A 12-1 Alabama run from 8:06 to 6:28 made it 91-68 and settled it.
Alabama shot only 35.5% from the field and 30% from three. It won with free throws and the offensive glass: 32-of-43 at the line against Arkansas State’s 7-of-16, and 25 offensive rebounds that led to 31 second-chance points.
Five Alabama players scored in double figures. Qayden Samuels led with 17 points and went 8-of-8 at the line. Fielder added 16, Brandon Garrison had 14 points and 10 rebounds, and Tarris Bouie scored 12. Keitenn Bristow grabbed 9 rebounds off the bench.
For Arkansas State, Taylor scored 20 points on 4-of-7 shooting from three. Chaz Watson added 15, Jordan Pyke 12, and Amadou Doumbia had 11 points and 10 rebounds.
