TuscaloosaStudentHousing.com is an independent local news and resource desk covering the off-campus rental market around the University of Alabama. We report on apartments, houses, neighborhoods, leasing trends, and the day-to-day realities of finding a place to live in Tuscaloosa and Northport.

Most students searching for housing get one of two things: a glossy property ad, or a stale listing copied from somewhere else. We exist to be the third option — a locally run desk that walks the neighborhoods, reads the leases, and writes about what students and parents actually need to know before they sign.

Founder & Managing Editor

Clay Shumate

Clay Shumate founded Tuscaloosa Student Housing to bring honest, ground-level reporting to a rental market that badly needed it. He holds a Master of Education from the University of Montevallo and spent roughly six years teaching History and Social Studies in West Alabama classrooms before turning that same research-and-explain instinct toward local housing.

He lives in Northport, knows the corridors students rent in, and personally writes and edits the reporting published here. When a property is reviewed or a neighborhood is profiled, it reflects what he found on the ground — not a press kit.

How We Work

Editorial standards

We hold our reporting to a simple, transparent set of standards so readers know exactly what they’re getting.

  • We do not aggregate. Every article on this site is original work, researched and written by our editor. We don’t scrape, spin, or republish other outlets’ content as our own.
  • Reporting reflects genuine findings. Property write-ups and walk-thru reviews are based on what we actually observe and verify. We don’t soften or rewrite a review because a property pays for advertising, and advertising never buys favorable coverage.
  • Advertising is labeled and separate. Sponsored placements and paid listings are clearly distinct from editorial reporting. A property paying to advertise has no influence over how it is covered.
  • Sources and facts are checked. We verify addresses, contacts, pricing context, and claims against primary sources before publishing, and we date our work so readers know how current it is.
  • We write for renters first. The audience is students and families making a real housing decision — not landlords, and not search engines.
